The Old Fashioned: A Classic Cocktail With a 'Grand' Twist

There’s something timeless about an Old Fashioned. It’s simple, bold, and sophisticated—the kind of cocktail that never goes out of style. For me, it’s my go-to drink. Whenever I visit a new restaurant or cocktail bar, I can’t resist trying their version of the legendary Old Fashioned.

On a trip to Canada, I stumbled upon what would become one of the best Old Fashioneds I’ve ever had. It wasn’t overly complicated, but it struck the perfect balance of whiskey warmth, citrus brightness, and bittersweet depth. That drink became the blueprint for how I make mine at home today.

A Brief History of the Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is one of America’s earliest cocktails, first appearing in the early 1800s. Originally, cocktails were simply a mix of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. Over time, bartenders got creative, adding liqueurs and garnishes, but when drinkers wanted the “old fashioned” way of making it, the name stuck.

It’s a drink rooted in tradition, yet flexible enough to let personal flair shine through—whether it’s swapping in a favorite whiskey, experimenting with bitters, or, in my case, adding a splash of Grand Marnier for a smooth orange accent.

My 'Grand' Fashioned Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot whiskey (I rotate between my favorites)

  • ¾ shot Grand Marnier orange liqueur

  • ¼ shot simple syrup

  • 4 shakes Angostura bitters

  • 4 shakes orange bitters

  • 1 cherry (but let’s be honest, I never stop at just one)

  • 1 orange peel (rubbed around the rim, then dropped into the glass)

Instructions:

  1. Add whiskey, Grand Marnier, and simple syrup to a glass with ice.

  2. Shake in both bitters.

  3. Stir gently for about 30 seconds to let the flavors mingle.

  4. Add a “fancy” ice cube and garnish with cherries and the orange peel.

Why This Recipe Works

  • The whiskey anchors the drink with depth and warmth.

  • Grand Marnier adds a subtle sweetness and rich orange note that complements the bitters.

  • The bitters balance everything out, giving that signature Old Fashioned punch.

  • The orange peel and cherries make it not just a drink, but an experience.

Final Sip

The Old Fashioned is more than a cocktail—it’s a ritual. For me, every sip is a nod to tradition, a reminder of my Canadian adventure, and a toast to enjoying life’s finer moments without overcomplicating things.

So next time you’re craving a cocktail, try this variation. Who knows—maybe it will become your preferred way to enjoy an Old Fashioned too.
